The independent Republic of Palau, an island country located southeast of the Philippines, has recently decided to change their immigration process.

More specifically, every visitor now has to sign a pledge upon entering the country promising the children of Palau to respect and behave in a specific manner. Palau is the first nation on earth to change its immigration laws for the cause of environmental protection.

Practically, visitors need to sign a passport pledge to act in an ecologically and culturally responsible way on the island, for the sake of Palau’s children and future generations of Palauans.

This exercise has raised the level of awareness for the environment. Better yet, one can sign this pledge online and join the fast growing environmental commitment!

The pledge itself was drafted by and for the children of Palau.

This exercise reminds us that we are all stewards of the planet and that we all carry responsibility in what we chose to do or chose not to do. Every action or absence of action carries its consequences.
