‘Bluetech’, ‘Ocean Data’ and ‘AI’ are the buzzwords currently that are most often peppering presentations in order to try to desperately get the attention of investment groups.

We have been entering a new world within Innovation when it comes to the study of the sea, and it is barely the beginning. What used to be a science reserved to a select few has opened up to a lot more people who are keen on following their curiosity. This development is largely due to the world of 3D printing that allows to put drones together for a measurable cost, and to incorporate multiple forms of technology, benefitting also from several open source solutions within technology that allow for more people to participate in the creation of marine drones, marine robots and the technology that manages all the types of data. Not only is 3D printing allowing for more people to participate in ‘inventing’ solutions by the sheer practical use of it, but it has reduced drastically the cost of entry.

While it all seems simple and plenty of people are already feeling threatened by the fact that technology could take over the world, the reality of the ocean tends to settle pretty quickly those fears. Magnificently too, I may add.

It was not that long ago, Saildrone popped up out of seemingly nowhere and today is leading pretty much as a reference. We then also get stories similar to the ones we hear from the tech world, such as starting out in a garage around an idea. Oshen is perhaps the greatest story that has made the press…
